College Writing Preparedness Survey

All students must take the College Writing Preparedness Survey. This survey helps us to identify whether you are interested in or would benefit from additional writing instruction and support in your first semester. In this survey, you will provide information about your writing and reading habits and write a short reflective paragraph on your history as a writer and reader. You will also have an opportunity to indicate your interest in our WRI 141, Introduction to College Writing course.

This workshop-based course is designed for students who wish to practice and develop the essential skills of writing, critical reading, and textual analysis at the college level. Instructors provide extensive feedback on assignments, helping students to gain more confidence with grammar, sentence structure, and the writing process as a whole.

Language Placement Assessment

Most students will take their language courses in their first year; however, some students will satisfy their language study in a subsequent year due to the required courses in their major. Stonehill requires two semesters of a language in sequence.  While you can continue the study of the language you took in high school, students may also explore the study of a new language, as well. If you have taken French, Spanish, German, or Italian you MUST take the online Placement Assessment. The assessment is required if you have previously studied French, German, Italian or Spanish even if you currently plan to take a new language in college. We will assign you to the appropriate level of a language based on your high school grades, years of study, and your scores on the Language Placement Assessment.

Calculus Readiness Assessment

If you are intending to major in Astronomy, Computer Science, Earth & Planetary Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Photonics, or Physics, you must take the Calculus Readiness Assessment. This helps us assess whether we should provide you with additional resources to ensure your success in Calculus in the fall semester. If you are majoring in one of the other sciences, you are NOT required to take the Calculus Readiness Assessment because the recommendation is to take Pre-Calculus prior to taking Calculus. You should only take the Calculus Readiness Assessment if you have a strong background in Calculus and would like to be considered for being able to bypass Pre-Calculus and go directly into Calculus.
