Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship offers grants for undergraduate students to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing internships abroad. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study and intern destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The Gilman Scholarship Program supports students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad, including students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Programs must be a minimum of four weeks. Applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, endorsed by the U.S. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is a 7 – 10 week summer study abroad experience centered on the development of a critical language.   CLS seeks participants from a diversity of backgrounds and career paths, with the goal of building a cadre of Americans who speak critical languages at high levels. Languages offered include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish and Urdu. The CLS Program is designed for students of all language levels.

David L. Boren Scholarship

Boren Scholarships fund undergraduates’ study abroad programs for those wishing to study non-traditional languages in non-traditional countries. Recipients of a Boren Scholarship receive funding in exchange for a commitment to pursuing a career in the federal government in the national security arena.   Program length must be at least eight weeks and proposals for two or more semesters are strongly encouraged.

Humanity in Action Fellowship

Humanity in Action is an intensive and demanding five-week summer Fellowship program that brings together international groups of 40 college students and recent graduates to explore human rights-centered conflicts in Europe.   Separate programs take place in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Warsaw. Each program is highly interdisciplinary, and features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians, and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums, and memorials.
