The following are lists of nationally prestigious and competitive fellowships, scholarships and awards available for seniors or recent alumni. Many prestigious awards provide funds for research or international study. It is important to be aware of any deadlines and due dates of application materials, as they may occur well in advance of the start date of the award.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, endorsed by the U.S. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is a 7 – 10 week summer study abroad experience centered on the development of a critical language. CLS seeks participants from a diversity of backgrounds and career paths, with the goal of building a cadre of Americans who speak critical languages at high levels. Languages offered include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish and Urdu. The CLS Program is designed for students of all language levels.
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA)

An English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) places a Fulbright award recipient in a classroom abroad to assist in teaching English to non-native English-speakers. ETAs help improve foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the U.S. while advancing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country. The age and academic level of classroom students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. ETAs may also pursue individual study/research plans while teaching. Program length is six months to one year.
Fulbright Full Grant

The Fulbright study/research grant category includes projects in both academic and arts fields. Study/research grants are available in approximately 140 countries. Applicants design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicant’s first step is to familiarize himself/herself with the host country’s program summary.
Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are prestigious, highly competitive full-cost scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants pursuing a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The program aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. Gates Cambridge Scholarships are extremely competitive: 4,000 applicants apply for 95 scholarships per year.
Global Health Corps

Humanity in Action Fellowship

Humanity in Action is an intensive and demanding five-week summer Fellowship program that brings together international groups of 40 college students and recent graduates to explore human rights-centered conflicts in Europe. Separate programs take place in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Warsaw. Each program is highly interdisciplinary, and features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians, and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums, and memorials.
Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships are issued each year to 40 young Americans to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programs contributes to their ultimate personal success. Students may apply for a one-year or two-year grant and must chose two preferred universities; those interested in studying at universities other than Oxford, Cambridge and LSE are especially welcomed. Minimum 3.7 GPA is required.
George J. Mitchell Scholarship

Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by higher education institutions in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides tuition, accommodation, a stipend for living expenses and travel. Candidates should have a demonstrated and sustained commitment to community and public service.
Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship award in the world. It brings outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. Each year 32 young Americans are selected as Rhodes Scholars, through a decentralized process representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Applicants from more than 300 American colleges and universities have been selected as Rhodes Scholars. In most years, even after a century of competition, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution which has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.
Samuel Huntington Public Service Award

The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides a $15,000 stipend for a one-year public service project. It can be undertaken alone or by working with an established organization in the United States or abroad.
Schwarzman Scholars
