College Mission Statement

Stonehill College, a Catholic institution of higher learning founded and guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross, is a community of scholarship and faith, committed to fostering a culture where differences are affirmed and anchored by a belief in the inherent dignity of each person.

Through its undergraduate and graduate programs in liberal arts, sciences and business, Stonehill College provides an education of the highest caliber that fosters critical thinking, free inquiry and the interchange of ideas.

In fulfillment of its motto, Lux et Spes, Stonehill College educates the whole person so that each Stonehill graduate thinks, acts, and leads with courage to create a more just and compassionate world.

CSSJ Mission Statement

The Center for Service and Social Justice animates the mission of Stonehill College through works of equity and advocacy.  Alongside community partners, students learn to build community, live in solidarity, and bring about a just society, while crossing borders of every sort in the spirit of Holy Cross.

The work and the mission of the CSSJ is at the heart of the mission of Stonehill College. It is a place where faith and action, service and learning, research and conviction intersect. The pursuit of service and justice have been prominent components of a Stonehill College education since the institution’s founding in 1948. This newly created Center for Service & Social Justice brings together under one umbrella structure the many offices, centers and academic programs that have over the years been devoted to the pursuit of justice.

The CSSJ will provide educational experiences in social concerns inspired by Gospel values and the Catholic social tradition so that students and faculty may better understand and respond to poverty and injustice. Through CSSJ programs students, faculty, staff, and alumni are enabled to think critically about today’s complex social realities and about their responsibilities in facing them.

Catholic Social Tradition

The creation of the Center for Service and Social Justice was inspired by the people, documents and principles of the Catholic social tradition.

Our Founders & Sponsors: the Congregation of Holy Cross

Seal of the Congregation of Holy CrossThe priests and brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross founded Stonehill in 1948 and continue to sponsor the College today.

When Fr. Moreau founded the Congregation in 1837, education and faith were being suppressed in France. The Congregation’s commitment to education, parish and mission – still relevant today – are rooted in the crisis of those times.

Fr. Moreau challenged his priests and brothers to become educators, envisioning vibrant communities of scholarship and faith where students would engage in a dynamic exchange of ideas. Stonehill continues this tradition of Holy Cross higher education.
