Chemistry Internships & Research Opportunities
Stonehill College and the Chemistry Department provide interested students with research and internships on campus and around the world. Students typically work with their advisors to find the programs best suited to their goals.
Research Opportunities
The Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) is an opportunity for students who have completed their first year at Stonehill to perform full-time, high-quality research over the summer months under the guidance of an expert faculty researcher. A student in the SURE program spends 8-10 weeks of the summer collaborating with a professor - and sometimes other students - on an original research project that fits into the faculty member’s overall research program.
The experience includes postgraduate career seminars, program-wide outings, weekly lunches, and a student poster session in the fall. SURE students generally live on campus and receive a stipend for their summer work.
RECENT EXAMPLES
- Chemistry major Anthony Moriondo ’18 worked with Leon Tilley, professor of chemistry, on approaches to the synthesis of tetrahedrane an elusive, highly strained compound with potential as a high-energy fuel or feedstock for fuel cells.
- Chemistry major Laurin Joseph ’18 worked with Deno Del Sesto, assistant professor of chemistry, on the study of metalloporphyrins on gold and silicon surfaces via scanning tunneling microscopy.
Students who are interested in conducting research with a faculty member during the academic year may enroll in an Independent Research course. Independent Research allows students to spend 10-15 hours per week working with a professor on an original laboratory research project.
Summer research programs provide opportunities for a student to spend the summer at a university anywhere in the country, or even abroad, working in the laboratory of a faculty member at a research university. These programs allow undergrads to work alongside graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, use sophisticated instrumentation and ultimately gain a sense of for graduate school.
Stonehill chemistry students have participated in highly competitive and prestigious research programs across the country and around the world.
